My approach to teaching reflects the varied and extensive
background of my own experience as a bassist. I focus on two of the
most basic fundamentals for all levels: ear training and timekeeping.
Ear training is very important to all musicians - for my students, I
want them to be able to relate what they hear to their fret board. Timekeeping
is also important to all musicians, but it is extremely important to
bassists - they don’t call drums & bass “the rhythm
section” for nothing! I use exercises involving repetition, syncopation,
and accenting.
I also examine other important aspects of playing, such
as melody, the K.I.S.S principle (Keep It Simple Stupid), gear, tuning,
different playing techniques, music theory (lots of music theory), and
so forth. Because each person is different, I use a very flexible approach
when putting together a lesson plan, based on level of experience, musical
interest, learning ability, and personal goals. My approach can be summed
up by the following statement, which I believe wholeheartedly:“If
you can hear it, you can play it.”
