Helpful Hints
These are some of the helpful hints
that I give to all my students:
1.) Keep a
large container of tepid (room temperature or right out of the tap;
no ice) water with you at all times during practices and/or rehearsals.
Drink from it frequently (even in the middle of a song if there is a
sufficient pause in singing for you to do so). It’s also a good
idea to follow the advice of diet experts, and drink at least 8 to 10
eight ounce glasses of water each day. This will help to keep your vocal
chords moist and lubricated.
2.) Always
remember, talking is harder on your voice than singing (as long as you’re
singing correctly), so if you have to do a lot of talking at any one
time, or over a long period of time, try to support correctly, and speak
in an upper register (very similar to your head voice when you’re
singing). This will be a lot easier on your vocal cords, and will help
prevent injury to them (trust me; I know this one from personal experience).
:-)
3.) As you
already know, avoid smoking and drinking alcoholic and/or caffeinated
drinks. These are all things that, for various reasons, will dry out
or otherwise irritate the mucous membranes of your throat; not something
you want to have happen when you’re trying to sing.
Of course there are plenty more where these came
from, so go ahead and e-mail me for an appointment!
