Annie grew up in a small suburb just outside Portland, OR., and she’s been in love with singing since she was a toddler. Annie involved herself in singing all the way through grade school, junior high and high school, singing in the concert choirs and in smaller groups, even doing some solo work and competitions. After Annie graduated from high school, she attended Pacific University, a small Liberal Arts college about 20 miles west of Portland, in the town of Forest Grove. She majored in and received a Bachelor Degree in Music Theory there. She also carried her love for singing with her all the way through college, where she began to take her vocal talent more seriously and trained with a private instructor in classical vocal technique. At that time her repertoire consisted of mainly operatic arias and art songs. She also was chosen to sing many solos for the choir and participated in several talent shows and musical theatre events at the university. After college Annie continued private voice lessons for a while, but her interest in singing took a turn toward more contemporary styles. When a friend of hers realized what she could do, he had Annie help him out by going into the recording studio to add her voice to a demo of some songs that he had written that he wanted to shop to the industry in California. |

After taking some time off to have a family it didn't take Annie long to get right back into her music and she eventually became very involved with her church choir and was even appointed assistant choir director. She also took it upon herself to figure out how to take the classical vocal training she had received in college, and turn her classical voice into the sizzling rock and roll voice she'd always wanted (Annie is frequently compared to Ann Wilson of the well known rock band Heart). It was also at this time that she became a prolific songwriter. Many musical friends, songwriting partners, open-mics and other musical events followed, as did a move to the Baltimore area, where Annie’s circle of musical acquaintances and associates has grown “exponentially”. When Annie arrived in Baltimore, she joined one band, and after that one dissolved, she formed another, from which came her introduction to Tobias Hurwitz, a local jazz guitarist and guitar instructor who was looking for someone to take the vocal instructor position at a new kids’ summer camp (kind of like a rock ‘n’ roll dream camp) that the National Guitar Workshop in was putting together, called DayJams. Tobias interviewed Annie and decided she would be right for the job, so Annie worked at DayJams during the summers of 1999 and 2000 teaching kids at the camp not only proper vocal technique, but also how to achieve a modern, contemporary sound. After the camp had finished the first year, Tobias suggested to Annie that she try giving voice lessons privately. She decided this sounded like a pretty good idea, and so has been teaching voice privately ever since. Annie enjoys working with many area band vocalists, singer/songwriters, and solo artists in and around the Baltimore/DC metropolitan area, helping them to perfect their craft. She looks forward to helping as many singers as possible reach their goal of vocal perfection. |
